05 Moness House

Crieff Road, Aberfeldy

Moness House is considered to be the oldest building in Aberfeldy, and was once the home of a powerful local family, the Flemyngs, which owned large estates in the area for at least three hundred years. In 1685 Robert Flemyng of Moness was governor of Inverary Castle.

Moness House was built in 1758, originally as a hunting lodge for the family and their guests. Although the Flemyngs had numerous daughters who married local lairds, the male line came to an end soon after the house was built.

The estate on which the house stands was sold to Lord Breadalbane in 1787 for the sum of £9,600 and was held by his successors until 1921. The house was extended to the east in or around 1845 and to the west in the 20th century; the extensions retaining the architectural style of the original building.

During World War II the house was used as a hostel for evacuated schoolchildren from Glasgow.  In 1954 Moness House was acquired by Moness Estates Ltd, and was taken over by the Moness Group Ltd in 1999. It is now a hotel situated in the heart of the Moness Resort.
