About

Introduction

The Breadalbane Heritage Society is based in Aberfeldy in the heart of Perthshire, and was founded in 1962. Our aims are to promote interest in, research into, and study of archaeology, history, antiquities, folklore, natural history especially of Breadalbane and the Upper Tay basin.

For more information on the history of the Society, please refer to our ‘A Brief History‘ page.

Activities

Centred on our aims noted above, we run a series of winter lectures and summer excursions.

We meet six times during the winter on the evening of the third Friday of the months between September and March excluding December. Talks are presented by speakers on a variety of topics based on our aims and interests and, at the beginning and end of the evening, there is always tea and coffee and time for an informal chat .

These meetings are usually held in the main hall of the Breadalbane Community Campus in Aberfeldy but due to the Covic-19 pandemic, the 2020-21 winter season talks were replaced with online Zoom presentations. Since then, we have recommenced with the indoor public meetings with the exception of the January and February meetings which will continue to be presented online by Zoom. We have decided to do this as the winter weather during these months can make travelling for the speakers as well as for the audience difficult and, at times, hazardous. In addition, this allows us to keep in contact with the many people who have joined us for the Zoom talks which spreads the activities of our Society to a wider audience.

During the summer, we usually have four mid-week outings of a two- to three-hour duration, generally held on a Wednesday morning and tend to be to local locations, although most summers we have included excursions to more distant locations and these can be full-day events. In previous years, we have offered multi-day excursions later in the summer to much further afield locations; to Iona in August 2021, the Angus area based in Montrose in August 2022, and the Culloden and Elgin areas in 2023. These are held over three or four days and we currently have preliminary plans for similar multi-day trips to the Kilmartin area in Argyll in August 2024, and possibly the Dumfries and Galloway area in 2025.

For more details of our winter and summer programmes, please take a look at our Events page

Projects

In addition, we have involvement in a number of projects including publications, assisting Perth & Kinross libraries with local family history research, and the study and maintenance of local sites of historical importance.

For more details of the range of projects in which we are involved, please take a look at our Project page.

Membership

Annual membership of the Society runs from the beginning of September every year. At the Annual Members’ Meeting held on Friday, 17th March 2023, it was agreed that the subscription rates for the forthcoming 2023-24 season would not change. For information about the 2023-24 membership details which includes the 2023-24 membership form whic can be downloaded, refer to the Membership page.

Trustees and Advisers

There are currently six trustees who form the Board of Trustees for the Breadalbane Heritage Society. For information on the trustees and advisers, refer to the Trustees and Advisers page.

AGM / AMM Minutes and Associated Papers

Annual General Meetings (AGM) have been held up until March 2019, after which the Breadalbane Heritage Society became a Scottish Charitable Incorporated Organisation (SCIO). Following this change, Annual Members’ Meetings (AMM) are held instead of Annual General Meetings. Due to restrictions imposed by the coronavirus pandemic, the first AMM, planned for 2020 was postponed and was held on Friday, 19th March, 2021.

The AGMs and AMMs up to March 2023 were all held in March at the beginning of the final meeting of the winter season of talks. However, at a Board meeting, it was decided that as our Annual Accounts run from the 1st of September to the 31st August, it would be more appropriate and relevant to our most recent activities if the AMMs in future were held in November of each year. Consequently, in 2023 a second AMM was held in November, as will all subsequent AMMs.

Minutes and associated papers of past AGMs and AMMs (in the future) can be found in the AGM / AMM Minutes and Papers page which you can find in the ‘Events’ tab pages. The 2021, 2022 and 2023 AMMs were recorded and links to these videos can also be found on the AGM / AMM Minutes and Papers page.
